The Jade plant, scientifically recognized as Crassula ovata and also known as the money plant or lucky plant, is indigenous to South Africa. As a succulent member of the Crassulaceae family, it thrives in arid and semi-arid environments, notably among rocky outcrops and cliffs in its native habitat. Appreciated globally as an ornamental houseplant, the Jade plant is known for its aesthetically pleasing features, low-maintenance requirements, and the cultural association with good luck and prosperity!

Jade plants exhibit resilience to extended periods of bright indirect sunlight and thrive with at least 4 hours of daily sunlight. As the plant matures, its ability to tolerate increased sun exposure also improves.

How much watering does the Jade plant require?

Watering this plant is contingent on the season and sunlight exposure. Before watering, check the soil's moisture level by inserting your finger an inch into it. During the active growth phases in spring and summer, the plant demands more water. In the colder dormant season, reduce watering frequency to approximately once a month.

Does a Jade need humidity? 

Jade plants thrive in typical indoor humidity levels and can be prone to issues like root rot if the environment is too humid. Ensure a well-ventilated space with proper watering, well-draining soil, and adequate air circulation for a healthy jade plant without the need for extra humidity.

Can I put my Jade plant outside?

This is an indoor/outdoor plant, perfect to transition to sunny spaces outdoors in the summer and a sunny sill when inside. In Canada, the jade will do well to sit outside in a bright spot during the summer but ensure that you bring the plants indoors if the temperature dips under 10 degrees Celsius.

Water

  • Watering this plant depends entirely on the season and the level of sunlight it receives. Ensure that the soil is dry before watering by placing your finder an inch into the soil.
  • This plant will require more water while it’s growing (in the Spring and Summer months) compared to the rest of the year. Water once a month in the colder dormant season.

  • Mushy leaves or black stems = Overwatered. Let your Jade plant dry out and start with a fresh watering schedule
  • Wrinkling leaves or dry soil means the plant is underwatered and it's thirsty! Give your Jade a good drink of water
  • Leaf drop means the plant is not getting enough light
